Chippewa-Herald Misleads with Headline

Chippewa-Herald |  3-8-2017

On Wednesday, March 8, 2017, the Chippewa-Herald featured a story titled:

Walker refuses to endorse federal health care bill

The article featured comments by Gov. Walker who was publicly expressing concerns about the newly introduced Republican-plan to overhaul Obamacare.

The Chippewa-Herald commits bias by headline in this case because the headline gives the false impression that Gov. Walker will in no way ever endorse the Republican-backed plan. To the contrary, Gov. Walker’s own comments make clear that he recognizes the proposed plan is a “work in progress” and that there is “more work to be done.” Yet one reading the headline would safely assume that Walker had completely written off the plan altogether.

Instead, compare the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s headline for the same story:

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker tepid on Paul Ryan’s Obamacare repeal plan

Unlike the Chippewa-Herald’s misleading headline, this headline more appropriately summarizes the current state of affairs.
