WBAY ABC 2 | 2/8/2017
On February 8, 2017, Channel 2 (WBAY) featured a story during its evening newscast and on its website titled “Wisconsin sheriffs training features anti-Black Lives Matter speaker.” One of WMCF’s “bias spotters” alerted us to this report, knowing something didn’t smell quite right. First, watch and read the story here.
Can you spot the bias? It is subtle, but it is there.
The reporter commits bias by policy endorsement. How? The report is based on the premise that it is somehow inappropriate that law enforcement would be “anti-Black Lives Matter,” or feature an author who is “anti-Black Lives Matter.” Why — is this not the organization whose members publicly shouted, “pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon” at public rallies across the United States?
Yet, despite this and countless other verbal and physical assaults on police, the reporter implies that law enforcement may be inappropriate in taking an “anti-Black Lives Matter” position. Notice, though, the reporter in no way questions BLM’s “anti-cop” position.
In choosing to “raise an eyebrow” at law enforcement’s stance, while not questioning BLM’s stance, WBAY commits bias by policy endorsement.
